
The Central Government has approved the 8th Pay Commission, creating a wave of excitement among government employees. Staff Selection Commission (SSC) recruits (such as MTS, CHSL, CGL, CPO, and various departmental staff) are especially keen to know how much their salaries may increase once the new structure comes into effect.

The commission is headed by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, with Prof Pulak Ghosh as part-time member and Pankaj Jain as member-secretary. The committee’s task is to review pay levels, allowances, and benefits for central government employees and pensioners.
SSC is one of India’s largest recruitment bodies, placing lakhs of employees in ministries, departments and field offices. This includes CHSL, CGL, CPO, MTS, Railway Group-D roles, CGDA offices and many others.

Employees also get Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Travel Allowance (TA) and other department-specific allowances. Because of their large numbers and lower pay levels, even a small change in fitment factor hugely impacts their salaries, which is why Level 1 employees are watching the 8th CPC closely.
A fitment factor is applied to the basic pay to revise salaries under a new pay commission. If the 8th Pay Commission uses a 1.92 fitment factor, the basic pay may look like this:

Based on news reports, Level 1 SSC employees may see a 15%–25% jump in their overall salary, depending on DA merger and final CPC recommendations. If DA is merged and reset, and HRA is added on top, the approximate salary layout may be:
The 8th Pay Commission is set to bring a meaningful salary hike for SSC-recruited employees, especially those at Level 1. With a possible 1.92 fitment factor, the basic pay may rise from ₹18,000 to over ₹51,000, offering significant financial improvement. Final figures will depend on the commission’s report, but expectations remain high as the implementation date of January 2026 approaches.
