Edelweiss Mutual Fund has announced the launch of India's first passive hybrid mutual fund, marking a significant development in the mutual fund sector. This new offering combines equity and government securities, providing investors with a balanced investment option.
The introduction of passive hybrid mutual funds in India comes after the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) permitted this category.
Edelweiss Mutual Fund's Nifty LargeMidcap250 Plus 8-13 yr G-Sec 70:30 Index Fund is the first of its kind, combining equity and government securities in a 70:30 ratio.
This development follows the establishment of a qualifying debt index that meets the ₹5,000 crore minimum assets under management (AUM) requirement set by Sebi.
The hybrid mutual fund segment has been one of the fastest-growing areas in the mutual fund industry, second only to precious metal offerings over the past year.
As of February 2026, hybrid funds were managing over ₹11 trillion.
The introduction of passive options is expected to offer advantages such as lower expense ratios and increased transparency compared to active funds.
Fund houses can now launch up to 3 passive hybrid funds with varying equity and debt exposure. These include balanced funds with 40-60% equity and 40-60% debt, equity-oriented funds with 65-80% equity and 20-35% debt, and debt-oriented funds with 65-80% debt and 20-35% equity.
