Vodafone Idea (Vi) shares rallied close to 10% on Monday after the Supreme Court clarified that the Indian government is free to reconsider the reassessment of all pending Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues. The ruling offers a glimmer of relief for the debt-laden telecom operator, which has been struggling under the weight of massive AGR liabilities.
During the latest hearing, the Supreme Court clarified that Vodafone Idea’s plea sought relief on both the additional and reassessment of all pending AGR dues. The court stated that the government has the discretion to review and consider these aspects.
This clarification is being viewed as a potential breakthrough that may pave the way for a reduction or rationalisation of the company’s pending dues, improving its long-term viability.
The AGR dispute stems from a disagreement over the definition of “adjusted gross revenue” used to calculate telecom operators’ license fees and spectrum usage charges. Vodafone Idea’s total AGR dues have been a major overhang, affecting its financial flexibility and delaying its revival roadmap.
With the court’s latest clarification, the government can potentially reassess the dues, which could lead to a partial relief or structured payment mechanism, supporting Vi’s balance sheet recovery and future investments in network expansion and 5G rollout.
