Indian equity markets will observe a trading holiday on Tuesday, 31 March 2026, on account of Mahavir Jayanti. Both major exchanges will remain shut for the day, affecting the overall trading schedule for the week.

With multiple holidays lined up, market participants may see fewer active sessions, which can influence trading patterns and liquidity during the remaining days.

Stock Market Holiday This Week

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will remain closed on Tuesday, 31 March 2026. This holiday is observed in recognition of Mahavir Jayanti.

As per the official Stock market holiday calendar, this is one of two scheduled market holidays during the week spanning 30 March to 3 April.

Impact on Weekly Trading Sessions

Due to the holiday schedule, equity markets will operate for only three trading days during the week. This reduction in trading sessions may result in adjusted trading activity, as market participants often plan their positions around shortened weeks.

Lower trading days can sometimes influence volumes and short-term market movements, particularly around the sessions immediately before and after holidays.

Commodity Market Timings

In the commodities segment, the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will remain closed during the morning session on 31 March. However, trading will resume later in the day during the evening session, which runs from 5:00 pm to 11:00 pm.

This split schedule allows partial trading continuity in commodities despite the holiday in the equity segment.

Conclusion

The market holiday on 31 March 2026, along with another scheduled closure during the week, results in fewer trading sessions for investors. While such interruptions are part of the annual calendar, they can influence short-term trading behaviour and market participation.
