India’s capital markets regulator is considering changes to the settlement framework in commodity derivatives, aiming to align operational features across different contract types.
Securities and Exchange Board of India has proposed introducing early pay-in (EPI) settlement for options contracts in the commodity derivatives segment.
At present, this benefit is available only for commodity futures contracts, leaving options contracts outside its scope.
The proposal follows industry representations requesting that the same facility be extended to options, ensuring consistency across derivative instruments.
The proposal was examined by a Working Group tasked with reviewing the regulatory framework governing delivery and settlement in the agricultural commodity derivatives segment.
After deliberations, the group recommended that the early pay-in facility should also be made applicable to options contracts.
This recommendation was subsequently placed before the Commodity Derivatives Advisory Committee in its February meeting, where it received broad agreement. The alignment across these bodies reflects a coordinated approach to updating settlement practices.
SEBI has issued a consultation paper outlining the proposal and has invited public feedback as part of the decision-making process. Stakeholders have been asked to submit their comments by May 26.
The move remains at the consultation stage, and final
implementation will depend on responses received and further regulatory consideration.
