With the launch of Electronic Gold Receipts (EGRs) on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India, investors can now purchase gold online just like buying shares, without stepping into a jewellery store.
Investors can buy EGRs through SEBI-registered brokers offering commodity or EGR trading access. Here’s how to buy EGRs:
Since EGRs trade like stocks, investors can buy or sell them anytime during market hours.
Electronic Gold Receipts are dematerialised gold instruments traded on stock exchanges. Each EGR is backed 100% by physical gold of 995 or 999 purity stored securely in authorised vaults.
One of the biggest attractions of EGRs is the “One Nation, One Price” model, which reduces regional pricing differences seen in traditional jewellery markets. Investors with a demat account can start with very small quantities such as 100 mg, 1 gram, or 10 grams, making gold investment affordable for retail buyers.
Yes. One of the key advantages of EGRs is the option to convert digital holdings into physical gold whenever required.
The process works in three stages. First, physical gold is deposited in SEBI-approved vaults where purity is verified. Second, electronic receipts are created and traded on exchanges. Finally, investors can submit a request through NSDL or CDSL to extinguish the EGR units and withdraw physical gold from designated vaults.
Features like easy digital holding, freedom from storage worries, assurance around purity, and the absence of making charges make EGRs a more convenient alternative to buying physical jewellery.
Beyond convenience, EGRs also stand out because they bring standardisation and liquidity to gold investing. Since they are exchange-traded securities, investors benefit from market-based price discovery and can buy or sell them more easily during trading hours instead of depending on local jewellers.
They are available in multiple denominations and purity options, which makes them flexible for both small retail participation and larger investors.
Another important feature is the regulated ecosystem behind them, involving the exchange, clearing corporation, depositories, and authorised vault managers, which adds an extra layer of transparency and settlement assurance.

NSE Electronic Gold Receipts are changing the way Indians invest in gold by combining the convenience of digital trading with the security of physical gold ownership. With lower entry barriers, transparent pricing, and easy conversion into physical gold, EGRs could emerge as a preferred alternative to traditional jewellery purchases and paper gold investments.
