JioHotstar Achieves 1 Billion Downloads Milestone on Google Play

JioHotstar, owned by JioStar, has crossed 1 billion downloads on Google Play, as per the news reports. This makes it one of the few streaming apps in India to reach the figure, along with Netflix and MX Player. The platform was formed in February 2025 after the merger of JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar.
Subscribers and Viewership
As per the news reports, JioHotstar has around 300 million subscribers and more than 500 million monthly active users. Netflix, operating in about 190 countries, has around 309.8 million subscribers as of September 2025. Among Indian services, Amazon’s MX Player has also crossed the billion-download mark, while Prime Video has recorded over 500 million downloads.
JioStar Financial Performance
In the July-September 2025 quarter, JioStar reported a 127.5% increase in net profit to ₹1,322 crore on a sequential basis. The rise came from steady viewership and content additions. The company has been focusing on longer-running series and daily engagement formats to maintain audience traffic.
Recent Releases
In October 2025, JioHotstar released an AI-based series, Mahabharat: Ek Dharmayudh, produced with Collective Artists Network. The show logged 26.5 million video views and became one of the most-watched titles on the platform. The platform continues to expand its catalogue across languages and categories.
Business Model
Unlike Netflix, which follows a subscription-only model, JioHotstar and Prime Video use hybrid formats that include both ad-supported and paid options. This structure allows broader access to content across different user segments.
With its download base and user numbers, JioHotstar remains one of the largest OTT services in India. It competes closely with global players in terms of reach and app usage.

Conclusion
Crossing one billion downloads is a major scale indicator for JioHotstar. The platform continues to see user participation, supported by its mixed revenue model and large content library.
