
Data released on February 13, 2026, shows that Insurance Ombudsmen received 17,237 life insurance complaints from policyholders in FY25. The figures highlight the distribution of grievances across insurers and the share of total complaints handled during the year.
Bharti AXA Life Insurance reported 3,286 complaints, accounting for 19.06% of total grievances. Of these, 516 were outstanding at the beginning of the year and 2,770 were received during the period.
Life Insurance Corporation of India recorded 2,090 complaints, representing 12.13%, while HDFC Life Insurance logged 1,462 complaints or 8.48%. Together, these 3 insurers accounted for 6,838 complaints, nearly 40% of the total 17,237 cases registered in FY25.
PNB MetLife India and Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance completed the top 5 with 1,180 and 1,081 complaints respectively.
Max Life Insurance reported 974 cases, IndiaFirst Life Insurance 926, Reliance Nippon Life Insurance 911, Tata AIA Life Insurance 671 and Kotak Mahindra Life Insurance 607 complaints.
Collectively, the top 10 life insurers accounted for 11,827 complaints, forming 68.6% of all grievances filed with the Insurance Ombudsman during FY25.
Other insurers such as ICICI Prudential Life Insurance with 571 complaints, SBI Life Insurance with 569, Edelweiss Life Insurance with 550 and Aditya Birla Sun Life Insurance with 443 also featured in the data.
Smaller counts were recorded by companies including Star Union Dai Ichi Life with 304, Canara HSBC Life with 166 and Pramerica Life with 149 complaints.
The total complaints comprised 1,895 cases outstanding at the start of the year and 15,342 new complaints received during FY25, aggregating 17,237 cases.

The FY25 data indicates that a significant share of life insurance complaints was concentrated among a limited number of insurers. The Insurance Ombudsman framework continues to serve as a mechanism for policyholders seeking resolution beyond insurer level grievance processes.
