The coming week from December 15 to 19 is expected to be an important one for stock markets, as several domestic and global events could shape investor sentiment. Inflation data, central bank decisions, and regulatory developments will be closely watched.
Markets remained volatile last week, with sharp losses in the early sessions followed by a partial recovery. Both benchmark indices ended the week down 0.52%. By December 12, the Sensex closed at 85,267.66, while the Nifty 50 ended at 26,046.95, recovering nearly half of the earlier losses. This cautious mood is likely to continue as markets digest fresh data.
India’s CPI-based inflation rose to 0.71% in November 2025, moving up from a record low of 0.25% in October. The increase was driven mainly by higher prices of vegetables, fuel, spices, and protein-rich food items. Food inflation remained negative at -3.91%, although the pace of decline slowed.
Alongside CPI, the wholesale price index (WPI) inflation data for November will be released on December 15. WPI trends are important as they reflect input cost pressures for companies. A higher reading could impact margins, while a softer number may provide relief to corporates.
Global markets will closely track US economic data this week. The US will release unemployment data, non-farm payrolls, manufacturing PMI, and retail sales on December 16. These numbers will provide insight into labour market strength and consumer demand.
In addition, US CPI inflation data for November will be released on December 18. This data will be crucial for understanding the future interest rate path and its impact on global liquidity and currency markets.
The SEBI board meeting scheduled for December 17 is another key event. Discussions are expected around total expense ratio norms, securities lending and borrowing mechanisms, and measures to ease participation for foreign investors. Any regulatory changes could have sector-specific implications.
Banking stocks may remain in focus after a recent repo rate cut, which led several banks to revise fixed deposit rates. Globally, interest rate decisions by the European Central Bank and the Bank of England on December 18, followed by the Bank of Japan on December 19, will influence global market sentiment.
With inflation data, central bank actions and regulatory developments lined up, markets are likely to remain sensitive to news flow this week. Investors may prefer a cautious approach while tracking these key cues.
