Bloomberg Index Services Ltd. (BISL) has announced the deferral of Indian government bonds’ inclusion in the Bloomberg Global Aggregate Index.

The decision follows the company’s ongoing evaluation of India’s market infrastructure and post-trade processes, with an updated review slated by mid-year 2026.

Inclusion Review Stays Open Amid Infrastructure Considerations

BISL has decided to maintain an open review of Indian government bonds for potential inclusion in the Bloomberg Global Aggregate Index.

While market feedback has been largely positive, the index provider highlighted that several operational and infrastructure issues still require attention. BISL is particularly focused on efficiency gaps in market systems and post-trade processes that affect global access and seamless integration.

The ongoing nature of this review reflects BISL’s approach to maintaining operational standards and ensuring major bond markets are suitably prepared before being admitted to the index.

Engagement With Stakeholders and Global Investors Ongoing

To ensure a thorough understanding of the Indian bond market’s operability, BISL confirmed ongoing collaboration with stakeholders.

This includes index users, market intermediaries, custodians, regulatory authorities, and government bodies. The goal is to identify and address challenges that may hinder index readiness and ensure a smoother integration process.

Bloomberg to Issue Next Update by Mid-2026

BISL stated that the next update on the review will be provided by mid-year 2026. At that point, it will share the next steps concerning the possible inclusion of Indian government bonds in the Bloomberg Global Aggregate Index.

Inclusion in this index, widely tracked by institutional investors, could potentially result in increased global capital participation in Indian government securities, subject to operational satisfaction.

Conclusion

The inclusion of Indian government bonds in the Bloomberg Global Aggregate Index has been deferred owing to infrastructure considerations. BISL will continue its review in coordination with market stakeholders and issue an update by mid-2026 on further developments.
