Pune is rapidly positioning itself as a key destination for Global Capability Centres (GCCs), building on its skilled talent pool, proximity to Mumbai, and growing infrastructure. With strong momentum over recent years, Pune is projected to cross 500 operational GCCs by 2030.
Between 2019 and 2025, the number of GCCs in Pune rose from 210 to over 360, a surge of 70%, as per Zinnov data. The city is gaining recognition for high-value capabilities across sectors like automotive engineering, BFSI, manufacturing tech, and healthcare.
Pune currently hosts around 11% of India’s mid-market and 13% of large-scale GCCs. By 2030, it is expected to host over 500 such centres.
Known as the ‘university city’, Pune benefits from an annual supply of nearly 90,000 engineering and IT graduates. Over 50,000 engineers graduate each year, adding to a robust local workforce.
Approximately 1,25,000 employees from Forbes Global 2000 companies are employed across nearly 100 GCCs in the region. Automotive and ER&D remain at the core of Pune’s differentiation, with 60+ automotive GCCs employing 1,10,000 engineers nationally.
Micro-markets within Pune like Hinjewadi, Kharadi, Magarpatta, and Chakan cater to diverse industries including IT, ER&D and BFSI. The upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport is also set to enhance global connectivity. Hinjewadi and Magarpatta lead the technology sector, while Kharadi hosts a 4.5 million sq. ft. SEZ housing firms like Citi Corp, Eaton, and Credit Suisse.

Pune's commercial rentals are 20% to 30% lower compared to Bengaluru and Hyderabad, making it economically attractive. From 2023 to 2025, Pune accounted for 34% of nationwide office space transactions, with GCCs taking 81% of that share. Maharashtra’s proactive stance with policies like MAITRI, MSInS, and the upcoming GCC policy ensures continued support for investors.
Despite the growth, Pune grapples with infrastructure issues, especially in Hinjewadi. Traffic congestion and poor maintenance have raised concerns. However, the state government has acknowledged the issues and is actively seeking solutions to retain and attract GCCs in the region.
Pune is steadily moving from a secondary tech city to a vital high-value GCC destination. Leveraging its academic prowess, sectoral strengths, and cost advantages, the city is poised to become a balanced and innovation-driven hub in India’s evolving GCC landscape by 2030.
