The Government of India’s flagship rooftop solar initiative, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, continues to gain momentum with installations across 23,96,497 households as of FY 2025–26.
This achievement represents 23.96% of the mission’s target of covering one crore households by FY 2026–27. The scheme is designed as a demand-driven programme aimed at accelerating clean energy adoption among residential consumers nationwide.
As of December 3, 2025, a total of 53,54,099 applications had been received on the National Portal. Out of these, 19,17,698 rooftop solar systems have already been installed, spanning nearly 24 lakh homes. For FY 2025–26 alone, the government has set an ambitious target of covering 35 lakh households under the scheme, reflecting its intent to scale up solar energy usage in the residential sector.
To accelerate adoption, several reforms and simplifications have been introduced. The entire process, from registration to subsidy disbursal, is now available online via the National Portal, ensuring efficiency and transparency.
Consumers benefit from collateral-free loans from nationalised banks at concessional interest rates pegged at repo rate plus 50 basis points, currently 6% per annum, with a tenure of 10 years.
Regulatory procedures have been eased through the removal of the technical feasibility requirement and by enabling automatic load enhancement up to 10 kW.
The scheme now includes RESCO and Utility Led Aggregation models to provide more options to consumers. Net metering agreements have been integrated directly into the application process.
Vendor registration has been simplified to ensure availability of qualified vendors across states. Capacity-building programs are being conducted to develop skilled manpower required for large-scale implementation. The government has also launched extensive awareness campaigns through print, TV, radio, and regional channels to reach consumers nationwide.
Implementation progress is regularly monitored through interactions with states and DISCOMs, alongside regional review meetings. A dedicated grievance redressal mechanism, including a call center operating in 12 languages at helpline number 15555, ensures the timely resolution of consumer concerns.

With strong administrative support, financial incentives, and streamlined processes, the PM Surya Ghar scheme is steadily advancing toward its 2027 target. The growing adoption reflects India’s commitment to expanding renewable energy access at the household level, reducing electricity costs, and fostering sustainable energy transformation across the country.
