The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved two major railway infrastructure projects worth approximately ₹2,781 crore. These initiatives, proposed by the Ministry of Railways, aim to expand capacity and improve connectivity across key regions of Gujarat and Maharashtra.
The sanctioned projects include:
Together, these projects will add about 224 km to the Indian Railways network, significantly boosting line capacity, easing congestion, and enhancing operational efficiency. The expanded infrastructure will also improve service reliability and support future traffic demands.
Aligned with the Prime Minister’s vision of building an Atmanirbhar (self-reliant) India, the projects are expected to drive regional development, creating new employment and self-employment opportunities for local communities.
Developed under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the projects emphasize integrated planning and improved multi-modal connectivity. Once completed, they will facilitate smoother movement of passengers, goods, and essential services across four districts in Gujarat and Maharashtra, benefiting nearly 585 villages with a combined population of around 32 lakh people.
This upgraded route will enhance access to the renowned Dwarkadhish Temple, supporting pilgrimage travel and contributing to the overall socio-economic growth of the Saurashtra region.
As part of the busy Mumbai suburban corridor, the additional tracks will ease commuter congestion, support future passenger growth, and strengthen connectivity between Mumbai and southern India.
The capacity expansion is crucial for the movement of major commodities such as coal, salt, cement, petroleum products, and containers. The project is expected to generate 18 MTPA (million tonnes per annum) of additional freight capacity.
Moreover, the rail enhancements align with India’s climate and sustainability goals. By shifting more freight to energy-efficient railways, the project is estimated to reduce oil imports by 3 crore litres and cut carbon emissions by 16 crore kg, equivalent to the environmental impact of planting 64 lakh trees.
