Indian Railways has continued its mission to electrify the network, achieving a substantial reduction in diesel use and enhancing overall efficiency.

Electrification Impact on Diesel Consumption

The rail system recorded a saving of 178 crore litres of diesel in the financial year 2024‑25 compared with 2016‑17, representing a 62% reduction.

This decline lowers dependence on imported crude oil and supports environmental goals. Total energy expenditure for traction in 2024‑25 amounted to ₹32,378 crore.

Extent of Network Electrification

About 99.4% of the broad-gauge network is now electrified. Before 2014, 21,801 route kilometres were electrified; between 2014 and 2025 an additional 46,900 route kilometres were added. All new line and multi‑tracking projects are being built with electrification.

State‑wise, 25 states have achieved 100% electrification, while Rajasthan stands at 99%, Assam at 98%, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka at 97%, and Goa at 91%.

Financial Outlay and Energy Costs

From 2020‑21 to 2024‑25, the railways invested ₹29,826 crore in electrification projects, including work in Tamil Nadu. Since 2023‑24, 10,932 Rkm of routes have been electrified up to January 2026.

The completion of projects depends on clearances, utility shifts, geological conditions and other factors that influence timelines.

Waste Management Initiatives

Alongside electrification, Indian Railways has expanded waste management. Initiatives include waste collection at designated stations, strict penalties for littering, rag‑picking along tracks, installation of plastic bottle crushing machines, and provision of dual‑type dustbins for segregation.

Sewage treatment plants, effluent treatment plants and material recovery facilities have been commissioned at several locations. Bio‑toilets have been fitted in 3,61,572 passenger coaches since 2014, eliminating direct discharge of human waste.

Conclusion

Electrification has enabled Indian Railways to cut diesel consumption by 178 crore litres, representing a 62% reduction, while extensive network coverage and waste management measures improve operational efficiency and passenger experience.
