India has maintained its strong momentum in coal production, achieving the 1 billion tonne (BT) milestone for the second year in a row despite ongoing global energy uncertainties, as per news reports.
The country reached the 1 billion tonne production mark on March 20, 2026, marking a consecutive annual achievement.
This comes at a time when global energy markets remain unstable due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia, making domestic production increasingly critical.
The sustained increase in coal production has helped meet rising electricity demand while enabling thermal power plants to maintain comfortable coal stock levels. This has played a key role in ensuring uninterrupted power supply across the country.
The achievement reflects stronger coordination across the coal ecosystem, supported by improved planning and execution.
The government has continued to focus on building a transparent and performance-oriented framework through proactive policy measures, regular monitoring, and stakeholder engagement.
"With sustained and coordinated efforts across the coal sector and the invaluable contribution of all stakeholders, the country has successfully achieved the landmark of 1 billion tonne (BT) coal production on March 20, 2026, for the second year in a row," the Coal Ministry said.
"Aligned with the national vision of 'Viksit Bharat 2047', these efforts reinforce the government's resolve to build a resilient energy framework, enhance domestic production capabilities, and drive sustainable economic development," it added.
