The Indian government has initiated discussions with automobile manufacturers regarding a potential transition from E20 to E25 fuel, as per The Business Standard report.
This move aims to address the challenges posed by rising crude oil prices and to enhance energy self-reliance by increasing ethanol content in fuel.
Currently, almost all petrol stations in India dispense E20 petrol, which is a blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. This blend is set to become mandatory across the nation from next month.
Ethanol is produced domestically, while over 85% of crude oil is imported, making ethanol blending a strategic move to reduce dependency on imports.
The proposal to shift from E20 to E25 has raised concerns within the automobile industry. One major issue is the potential impact on Bharat Stage-VI emission standards.
Vehicles are tested for compliance with specific fuel types, and a change in fuel composition could affect emission outcomes during real-world testing.
Automakers are also worried about liability issues in case of customer complaints regarding performance, fuel efficiency, or maintenance.
They argue that vehicles were compliant with norms at the time of sale, and changes in fuel composition are beyond their control.
Another concern is the limited testing done for E25 fuel. While extensive validation has been conducted for E20, similar large-scale validation for E25 is lacking.
Automakers emphasise the need for clear communication from the government to consumers about any fuel transition.

The Ministry of Heavy Industries recently held a meeting with the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers to discuss the feasibility of E25 fuel.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is also pushing for the introduction of flex-fuel vehicles in India. However, no automaker has launched such vehicles due to higher costs compared to petrol-run models.
The discussions on transitioning from E20 to E25 fuel in India highlight the government's efforts to reduce crude oil dependency and promote domestic ethanol production. However, concerns from the automobile industry regarding emissions, vehicle compatibility, and consumer communication need to be addressed for a smooth transition.
