The Delhi government is set to significantly scale up electric vehicle infrastructure in 2026 as part of its broader push to curb vehicular pollution and accelerate clean mobility in the national capital, as per PTI report.
The city will add 7,000 new electric vehicle charging points during the year, taking the total count beyond 16,000 by December. Delhi currently has 8,849 charging points against an estimated requirement of 36,150, leaving a gap of over 27,000 points.
To address this shortfall, the government has set quarterly installation targets, with 1,000 charging points planned for January-March, 1,500 for April-June, 2,300 for July–September and 2,200 in the final quarter of 2026.
Public transport infrastructure will play a key role in the expansion. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will increase charging points from 140 to 215, while the Regional Rapid Transit System will install 12 chargers at Ashok Vihar and Anand Vihar stations.
On battery swapping, the city had 893 stations as of December 31, 2025, against a requirement of 1,500. The government plans to add 1,268 stations by December 2026, with phased additions across all four quarters.
The Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0 is expected to be notified by March and will work alongside the Centre’s PM e-Drive scheme to offer incentives aimed at boosting EV sales.
Delhi continues to be among India’s leading EV markets, ranking third in adoption during FY25. The city registered 83,423 electric vehicles during the year, with adoption spread across two-wheelers, three-wheelers and public transport segments.
