The government has rolled out a set of targeted trade promotion guidelines for Indian commercial missions abroad as it intensifies efforts to expand exports and reduce dependence on a limited set of markets amid global economic uncertainty, as per PTI reports.
The guidelines outline clear responsibilities for commerce representatives stationed overseas, covering areas such as handling non-tariff barriers, market engagement initiatives, trade intelligence, market research, and efficient planning and use of resources.
Commercial officers are expected to act as the primary interface between Indian exporters and host-country stakeholders, strengthening India’s trade presence on the ground.
The framework also directs representatives to align trade promotion activities with India’s existing free trade agreements to improve their utilisation.
Missions have been encouraged to undertake regular market surveys to identify demand trends and emerging opportunities for Indian goods and services, helping exporters respond more effectively to local market requirements.
