The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday presented its Budget for 2026–27, marking the first civic budget in four years to be tabled before newly elected corporators after prolonged municipal polls. Mayor Ritu Tawde and Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani unveiled a ₹4,248 crore education outlay, underscoring a renewed focus on infrastructure, digital learning, and holistic development.

The education budget has risen by ₹292 crore compared to last year, reflecting a stronger push toward academic reforms and capital investments.

Education Budget Sees 6% Rise, Capex Up 26%

For FY27, revenue expenditure in education has increased 6% to ₹3,758.08 crore, up ₹213.74 crore from the previous year. Capital expenditure has been proposed at ₹490 crore, which is a sharp 26% jump over the revised estimate for 2025–26.

Overall, revenue generation and expenses of over ₹3,844 crore were proposed, while capital expenditure in education alone stands at over ₹440 crore, according to media reports.

The rise in capital spending signals the BMC’s intent to strengthen school infrastructure, upgrade facilities, and invest in long-term capacity building.

Focus on Teacher Training and Libraries

A key highlight of the BMC Budget 2026 is investment in teacher training and learning resources. Around ₹2.40 crore has been earmarked for teacher training programmes aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The aim is to equip educators with updated curriculum knowledge and modern pedagogical tools.

Additionally, ₹5 crore has been allocated to enhance school libraries with academic and competitive exam materials, alongside infrastructure upgrades to promote reading habits among students.

Student Welfare and Cultural Development

The civic body has also allocated ₹19 lakh for meritorious student assistance. Top-performing Class 10 students scoring above 90% in CBSE, ICSE, IB, and Cambridge boards will receive ₹25,000 or their tuition fees, whichever is higher.

To encourage co-curricular development, fresh funding has been earmarked for music education. Primary schools will receive ₹1 crore and secondary schools ₹35 lakh for instruments such as harmoniums, tablas, keyboards, and sound systems. A one-day field camp for music teachers is also planned.

Conclusion

The BMC Budget 2026 reflects a balanced approach: higher capital expenditure, targeted student incentives, and stronger teacher training. With elected corporators back in oversight roles, the civic body is signalling transparency and renewed accountability as it invests in Mumbai’s education ecosystem.
