The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has completed more than one crore Mandatory Biometric Updates (MBUs) for schoolchildren across India. The update drive has been carried out in over 83,000 schools as part of a mission-mode campaign launched last year.

The special campaign began in September 2025 after UIDAI integrated its system with the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+). This integration helped authorities and schools identify children who were due for Aadhaar biometric updates and organise enrolment camps within school campuses.

Why Biometric Updates Are Important for Children

Aadhaar enrolment for children below the age of five is different from adult enrolment. While a child under five can get an Aadhaar using basic details such as photograph, name, date of birth, gender, address and birth certificate, fingerprints and iris scans are not taken at this stage.

This is because biometrics in young children are not fully developed. UIDAI requires children to update their Aadhaar biometrics when they cross the ages of 5 years and 15 years. These updates are considered essential to ensure that the Aadhaar record remains accurate and usable for authentication.

What Happens If MBUs Are Not Completed

UIDAI has warned that if Mandatory Biometric Updates are not completed, children may face authentication issues later. This could affect access to government scheme benefits and may also create problems during registrations for important examinations.

This includes competitive and university-level exams such as NEET, JEE, and CUET, where Aadhaar-based verification is commonly used.

Campaign Still Ongoing Across the Country

UIDAI’s regional offices have been coordinating with state education departments, district administrations, registrars and school authorities over the past five months to carry out this exercise.

The campaign is still ongoing and will continue until all schools across India are covered.

Aadhaar Biometric Update Fees: What Parents Should Know

UIDAI has waived biometric update charges for children aged 7 to 15 from 1 October 2025, for a one-year period.

Biometric updates remain free for children in the 5–7 and 15–17 age groups as well.

Apart from school camps, parents can also complete biometric updates at Aadhaar enrolment centres and Aadhaar Seva Kendras. During the same period, around 1.3 crore additional MBU transactions were completed at these centres.

Conclusion

UIDAI’s large-scale school campaign has made it easier for parents and children to complete Aadhaar biometric updates on time. Since these updates are crucial for future authentication and exam registrations, parents should ensure their child’s Aadhaar biometrics are updated as per the required age milestones.
