The Karnataka Commercial Tax Department has started sending GST notices to small traders and shopkeepers who earn more than ₹40 lakh annually through UPI payments. This has caused panic among many small business owners, especially in Bengaluru. Some have even removed UPI QR codes from their shops and started accepting only cash.

What is Happening to Traders After Receiving GST Notices?

Over the past few years, UPI payments have become very common among shopkeepers due to the convenience they offer and changes in customer behaviour after COVID. Most customers prefer UPI over cash.

However, this recent crackdown has caused some traders to go back to accepting only cash. Despite this, officials say the UPI system was consumer-driven. “If one trader refuses UPI, another will accept it,” said Bansal.

Mixed Reactions from the Public

While some customers are unhappy about having to withdraw cash again, others support the government. One user on social media pointed out that anyone receiving over ₹50 lakh via UPI is not a poor vendor and should follow the law.

How Many Traders Have Received the UPI GST Notices?

As per news reports, the Karnataka Commercial Tax Department has found over 14,000 such cases. It has collected UPI payment data from 2021 to 2025 and is checking which traders are registered and compliant with GST rules.

Since many traders may deal only in exempt goods or be under the GST composition scheme, which carries lower tax, they will be given a opportunity to explain their case. Hence, such traders need not panic.

Conclusion

The GST notices in Karnataka have made small traders nervous about accepting UPI payments. Though the government says it is only enforcing tax laws, the fear of penalties is pushing some shopkeepers back to cash. How this will affect the use of digital payments in the state remains to be seen.
