Tata Group Owned Tata Electronics is intensifying its drive to develop a skilled semiconductor workforce in India, as per Economic Times report. As part of its strategy, the company is sending hundreds of employees to Taiwan for training in collaboration with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC), aligning with its significant investments in chip fabrication and packaging plants.

Chipmaking Skills Boost: Tata Trains Staff in Taiwan

Tata Electronics has embarked on a structured programme to build technical capabilities for its semiconductor operations. A few hundred employees have already been sent to Taiwan, where they are undergoing specialised training at PSMC, a key Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer and Tata’s technology partner.

The training initiative is designed to bridge the talent gap in India’s nascent chip making industry. Employees are being trained in areas critical for operating the upcoming semiconductor fabrication unit in Dholera, Gujarat, as well as the outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facility in Assam.

Training is being carried out in phased batches, with around 50 to 75 personnel sent at a time. This staggered approach is in response to PSMC’s limited training capacity and ensures focused, hands-on learning for each group.

₹91,000 Crore Fab in Gujarat and ₹27,000 Crore OSAT in Assam

The semiconductor fab in Dholera represents a ₹91,000 crore investment by Tata Electronics and is expected to generate over 20,000 direct and indirect jobs. Similarly, the ₹27,000 crore OSAT facility in Assam is projected to create approximately 27,000 job opportunities.

These large-scale infrastructure projects signify a pivotal shift in India’s semiconductor ecosystem, driven by both private sector investment and government support. At the Dholera groundbreaking event held in March 2024, it was announced that the first chip is likely to roll out by December 2026. The first operational phase of the Assam OSAT facility is scheduled for mid-2025.

Functional Hiring and Role-Based Training

Tata Electronics is employing a role-specific recruitment model for its semiconductor projects. Teams are being assembled in groups of around 75, categorised by functions such as:

  • Equipment Engineering

  • Yield Engineering

  • Process Technology

  • Quality Engineering

While some functions require fewer personnel, others demand extensive expertise and larger teams. The workforce being sent to Taiwan includes both recent graduates and individuals with relevant industry experience, ensuring a balanced and capable talent pool.

Moreover, the company has recruited senior professionals from global semiconductor companies, including Intel and GlobalFoundries to bring strategic knowledge and leadership into the fold.

Strategic Importance of Taiwan Training

Taiwan holds a central position in the global semiconductor landscape, with advanced foundries and chipmaking expertise. Tata’s partnership with PSMC enables employees to gain real-time exposure to world-class manufacturing practices.

This overseas training model is integral to operational readiness. It provides Tata Electronics with a technically proficient workforce ready to lead operations at its state-of-the-art facilities once they become operational.

Conclusion

Tata Electronics is taking significant steps to position itself as a major player in India's semiconductor journey. By investing in global training and robust hiring strategies, the company is laying the groundwork for the successful launch of its fabrication and packaging units. The ongoing training programmes in Taiwan underscore Tata’s commitment to building a resilient and skilled semiconductor workforce capable of meeting global standards.
