Vodafone Idea has introduced handset theft and loss insurance for its prepaid users through select recharge packs. This move brings device protection to a large section of mobile users who have traditionally had limited access to handset insurance. The insurance is bundled with specific prepaid plans, removing the need to buy a separate policy.

Who Can Get This Insurance?

The insurance benefit is available with three prepaid recharge packs priced at ₹61, ₹201, and ₹251. Once a user completes the recharge, the insurance cover is activated automatically. There is no additional sign-up process or extra premium to be paid.

Prepaid users make up the majority of India’s mobile subscriber base. For many of them, the smartphone is their primary tool for digital payments, work-related tasks, and everyday communication. Losing a handset can disrupt daily life and lead to unexpected expenses, especially for users managing tight monthly budgets.

Coverage Details and Validity

The handset insurance covers theft and loss up to ₹25,000. The coverage amount remains the same across all three recharge plans, but the validity period differs.

  • The ₹61 pack offers 30 days of insurance along with 2 GB of data.
  • The ₹201 pack provides insurance cover for six months and includes 10 GB of data.
  • The ₹251 pack extends the insurance cover to one year, also with 10 GB of data.

This structure allows users to choose coverage based on how long they want protection for their device.

How Are Claims Expected to Work?

Claims are expected to follow a digital process. Users will need to report the theft or loss and submit the required documents as part of the claim procedure. While the broad process has been outlined, detailed information on exclusions and claim timelines has not yet been shared.

Why This Move Is Important

Handset insurance in India has mostly been offered at the time of buying a new phone. As a result, prepaid users have often stayed away due to cost concerns or lack of awareness. By bundling insurance with a recharge pack, Vodafone Idea lowers the entry barrier and makes protection more accessible.

For telecom companies, adding services like insurance to recharge plans is also a way to enhance value without directly increasing tariffs. Such add-ons are becoming more common as competition in the telecom sector remains intense.

Conclusion

Vodafone Idea’s prepaid handset insurance is a practical step towards offering more value to users. By combining mobile recharge with device protection, the company is addressing a real concern for prepaid customers while making insurance simpler and easier to access.
