Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd (Sona Comstar) has taken a major strategic step by entering the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) market through a joint venture with Jinnai Machinery Co, Ltd (JNT). The new venture will manufacture driveline systems and components for EV and non-EV customers, with operations set to begin in the second half of FY26.

Major Investment to Tap Into World’s Largest EV Market

The JV marks Sona Comstar’s expansion into China, the world’s largest EV market, which accounted for two-thirds of global EV sales in 2024, with annual sales reaching 11 million units. Sona Comstar will invest $12 million in the first phase and will hold a 60% equity stake in the JV. JNT will contribute $8 million in assets and business. The partnership comes as part of the company’s broader effort to build its presence across high-growth Asian markets.

Commenting on the venture, Mr Vivek Vikram Singh, MD & Group CEO of Sona Comstar, said: “I am excited to partner with JNT to establish a driveline manufacturing plant in China. This joint venture marks a significant step in our strategy to expand into the rapidly growing Asian markets. As the largest electric vehicle market in the world and a leader in EV technologies, China offers tremendous opportunities for innovation and growth.”

Strategic Strengths and Global Reach

The joint venture leverages Sona Comstar’s strengths in driveline system design and advanced machining, alongside JNT’s proficiency in casting and moulding. JNT holds 63 patents and 36 proprietary technologies and serves top OEMs across the automotive, off-highway, and rail sectors in China, North America, Europe, and Japan. The JV will also benefit from JNT’s existing customer base and supplier relationships in China.

With a robust order book in place, the venture is expected to meet strong demand. Singh added: “By leveraging the strengths of both partners, this venture is well-positioned for strong growth, and it has the potential to become a key supplier of driveline solutions for electric vehicles in the region.”

Building a Foundation for Long-Term Growth

Sona Comstar is already a global supplier for differential assemblies for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in North America and a top player in Europe. The new JV plant will support expansion in markets like China, Japan, and South Korea while boosting market share in Europe and North America. The Chinese government’s push towards green mobility and infrastructure investments further aligns with Sona Comstar’s ambitions to be a key global EV supplier.

In 2024, China's electric vehicle market soared, selling 11 million units. Chinese original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) led this charge, making up 76% of total worldwide EV sales.

With the venture set to begin operations in H2 FY26, it is well-positioned to serve both electric and conventional vehicle markets. Backed by deep industry expertise and a forward-looking partnership, this collaboration is poised to play a pivotal role in the evolving EV landscape.
