The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Mr. Nitin Gadkari, confirmed a bold infrastructure push for 2025, with project sanctions set to double to ₹5,00,000 crore ($58.16 billion). The ministry targets 100 km of road construction daily while addressing execution challenges and implementing reforms for seamless delivery.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways plans to significantly ramp up investments with infrastructure projects sanctioned worth ₹5,00,000 crore in the current financial year. This move effectively doubles the typical annual expenditure, with the aim of accelerating India's highway development momentum. While achieving 100 km of daily road construction remains ambitious, the target underscores the government's focus on transformative infrastructure growth.
Projects under the Bharat Mala scheme are now being streamlined and aligned under the Gati Shakti master plan, with an emphasis on interconnecting ports, industry clusters, religious sites, and mining regions. The realignment is set to reduce redundancies and ensure seamless logistics movement, improving efficiency in both goods and commuter transport.
Apart from road-building, the ministry is promoting green mobility technologies. Trials for 25% to 27% ethanol blending and 10% isobutanol use in diesel are underway. Additionally, hydrogen fuel cell technology is advancing with 10 projects in the pipeline. For reduced import dependency, methods like bio-bitumen production and indigenous semiconductor manufacturing under the PLI scheme are actively pursued.

To tackle urban gridlocks, ₹1,00,000 crore worth of decongestion projects are currently active in Delhi. An additional ₹30,000 crore is set to be invested for further capacity expansion. Tree banks and compensatory reforestation will play a key role in mitigating the ecological impact of such projects, as India progresses toward its 2070 net-zero emissions goal.
India's road infrastructure is set for a significant boost with ₹5,00,000 crore planned in project sanctions this year. Alongside road construction, integration of green mobility, urban decongestion strategies, and technology-led manufacturing will collectively reshape the nation's transport landscape in 2025 and beyond.
