Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced that starting August 1, every household in the state will receive 125 units of electricity free of cost each month. The scheme is expected to benefit 1.67 crore domestic consumers.
In a social media post on platform X, Kumar said, “This step is aimed at providing relief and empowerment to the people.” The move comes as part of the state government’s effort to reduce financial stress on families and ensure access to affordable energy.
Alongside the free electricity scheme, the Chief Minister has also shared a plan to boost solar power generation in Bihar. Over the next 3 years, the government aims to install solar power systems on rooftops or nearby public land, with the consent of consumers.
The goal is to generate up to 10,000 MW of solar energy in the state.
Under the Kutir Jyoti Yojana, extremely poor families will get solar panels installed free of cost. Other families will receive financial help to set up solar systems, making it easier for more people to switch to green energy.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said that the state has always worked to make electricity affordable and accessible. He has called this scheme a major step toward sustainability and social welfare.

With this move, Bihar joins the list of states offering free or subsidised electricity to ease the cost of living. As the government focuses on both short-term relief and long-term clean energy, the scheme could bring real change to millions of homes in the state.
