Shares of Vodafone Idea declined by up to 5% on October 6, 2025, as market participants braced for the long-anticipated Supreme Court verdict concerning the telecom company's adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues of ₹9,450 crore. The hearing has seen multiple deferrals, raising uncertainty in the market.
The top court is expected to rule on Vodafone Idea's petition challenging the Department of Telecom’s (DoT) ₹9,450 crore AGR claim. Vodafone Idea argues that a large portion of the demand, including ₹5,675 crore linked to pre-merger Vodafone Group and ₹2,774 crore post-merger dues, is either duplicated or falls outside the 2019 Supreme Court ruling. The company has insisted on a fresh reconciliation process dating back to pre-2017.
The Supreme Court has previously postponed the hearing twice, first on September 19, 2025, and again on September 26, 2025. In both instances, the Centre and Vodafone Idea did not object to the delays, citing the need for a comprehensive solution. The matter has now come to a head with a verdict expected today, October 6, 2025.
While the Centre holds a 49% stake in Vodafone Idea following the ₹53,000 crore debt-to-equity support package of 2021, it has made it clear that no further relief is under consideration. The Minister of State for Communications reaffirmed that the telecom operator must find its own way forward. Meanwhile, the government remains outside the promoter classification despite being the largest shareholder.
