State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest lender, has set a goal to increase the representation of women in its workforce to 30 percent over the next 5 years. Currently, women account for 27 percent of the bank’s total staff, though they make up nearly 33 percent of frontline employees. The initiative forms part of SBI’s wider strategy to foster a more diverse and inclusive workplace.
SBI has introduced several programmes to support women at different stages of their careers. These measures include creche allowances for working mothers, family connect programmes, and training sessions for employees returning from maternity, sabbatical, or extended sick leave.
Such initiatives aim to create a workplace where women can grow professionally while maintaining a balance between work and personal commitments.
The bank has launched the ‘Empower Her’ initiative to identify, mentor, and groom women for leadership roles. This programme offers structured leadership labs and coaching sessions designed to build a pipeline of future top women executives.
By focusing on leadership development, SBI aims to ensure greater female representation across managerial and senior positions.
Recognising the unique health needs of women, SBI has implemented targeted programmes such as breast and cervical cancer screenings, nutrition allowances for pregnant employees, and a cervical cancer vaccination drive. These initiatives demonstrate the bank’s commitment to supporting the health and well-being of its women workforce.
SBI currently operates more than 340 branches staffed exclusively by women, with plans to expand this number. Women employees are represented across all geographies and hierarchical levels, reflecting the bank’s dedication to inclusivity and equal opportunities. The bank also maintains a skilled pool of IT specialists to ensure the security and efficiency of its operations, further supporting women in technical roles.
