The upcoming GST rate revision from September 22, 2025, is set to impact air travel costs, particularly for premium cabins. While economy fares maintain a 5% GST, business and first class will now carry an 18% GST. Travellers can still evade increased charges by booking early.
From September 22, 2025, a revised GST slab will come into force, increasing tax on premium air travel from 12% to 18%. These include premium economy, business, and first class. In contrast, economy class tickets retain their 5% GST. The tax rate applied is determined by the date of booking and payment, not the date of travel. Hence, tickets booked and paid for before September 22, 2025, will carry old rates even if the flight is scheduled for a later date.
According to the GST framework, the time of supply determines which tax rate applies. If booking and payment are made before the new rates apply, the older GST rate remains effective. For instance, booking a business class ticket on or before September 21, 2025, means a 12% GST. Post September 22, the same booking will incur 18% GST if done after the rate change date.
Travellers cancelling flights after booking at the old rate are eligible for a GST refund equivalent to the original tax paid, subject to airline cancellation charges. Even if GST rates change by the time of cancellation, the input credit remains fixed to the invoice amount, offering clarity and financial fairness to flyers.

For those planning travel in late 2025 or early 2026, securing flight tickets before September 22, 2025, can lead to tangible savings on GST. Especially for frequent premium travellers, this 6% jump in tax can result in significant additional costs over multiple bookings.
The revised GST regime simplifies tax brackets but raises premium air travel costs. Booking and paying before September 22, 2025, ensures passengers pay the older, lower GST. This clarity in timing offers travellers a clear financial advantage.
