Reliance Jio continued its strong performance in the telecom sector by adding the most number of wireless subscribers in August 2025. According to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Jio added 1.95 million new users during the month, maintaining its position as India’s largest telecom operator.
At the end of August, Jio’s total wireless subscriber base stood at 479.45 million, far ahead of its competitors. Bharti Airtel followed with 391.97 million users, while Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) stood at 203.55 million and 91.75 million, respectively.
A surprising development was BSNL’s strong performance in August. The state-run telecom operator added 1.38 million subscribers during the month, overtaking Airtel’s 496,087 additions to claim the second spot in net subscriber gains.
Vodafone Idea continued to lose users, shedding around 308,984 subscribers in August. Although the losses have slowed compared to previous months, Vi still faces challenges retaining its customers amid intense competition and limited 5G presence.
In terms of active subscribers, Jio added 2.3 million users, Airtel gained 1.3 million, and Vi’s losses reduced to just 0.1 million, according to a DAM Capital analysis.
Jio also maintained its lead in the home broadband market, adding 0.9 million subscribers in August, while Airtel added 0.3 million. Jio now commands a 40% market share in home broadband, up from 32% a year ago, while Airtel holds 21%.
The total number of machine-to-machine (M2M) connections grew by 5.1 million in August. Airtel led this segment with 3.9 million additions, followed by Jio with 0.9 million and Vi with 0.2 million. Despite this growth, the M2M segment continues to generate low revenue per user.
Additionally, porting requests touched 15.1 million, one of the highest levels in recent months, indicating intense competition in the telecom market.

Jio’s strong subscriber growth and leadership in both wireless and broadband segments highlight its dominance in India’s telecom market. BSNL’s recent momentum shows signs of revival, while Airtel maintains steady growth. However, Vodafone Idea continues to struggle, signaling that the battle for market share remains fierce.
