The JSW Group is holding advanced discussions with leading Japanese and South Korean manufacturers to form a joint venture for battery cell manufacturing in India, as per the Economic Times report.

The initiative is part of the conglomerate’s broader plan to strengthen its new energy vehicle (NEV) ecosystem and reduce reliance on Chinese imports amid global supply chain uncertainties.

Strategic Push Toward Local Battery Manufacturing

The partnership aims to address one of the most critical gaps in India’s EV value chain the domestic production of battery cells, which remains heavily dependent on China.

Serving Multiple JSW Business Verticals

The proposed JV will cater to multiple divisions within the JSW ecosystem, including:

  • New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) such as plug-in hybrids and strong hybrids
  • Grid-scale energy storage systems
  • Renewable energy integration

The new entity could either be housed under an existing group company or a new promoter-led firm, depending on the strategic alignment of JSW’s businesses.

Longstanding Japan and Korea Ties

JSW already has deep industrial collaborations in both Japan and South Korea, including joint ventures with JFE Steel and Toshiba.

These existing relationships are expected to facilitate technology transfer and local production capabilities for the upcoming battery cell project.

EV Ambitions Drive the Initiative

Battery cell manufacturing is emerging as a critical pillar in JSW’s electric mobility strategy.

  • JSW MG Motor India, a joint venture between SAIC Motor (China) and JSW Group, plans to expand its EV lineup and consolidate its position as India’s second-largest electric carmaker after Tata Motors.
  • Separately, JSW Motors, a wholly owned subsidiary, is developing its own new energy vehicles through licensing deals with overseas automakers.

A new manufacturing facility in Sambhaji Nagar (Maharashtra) will produce electric vehicles, battery packs, and eventually, battery cells.

Conclusion

JSW Group’s discussions with Japanese and South Korean companies highlight its intent to strengthen India’s domestic battery ecosystem and secure supply chains for its energy and mobility ventures. While details of the partnership are yet to be finalised, the move aligns with India’s growing focus on localisation and energy independence.
