
The JSW Group is holding advanced discussions with leading Japanese and South Korean manufacturers to form a joint venture for battery cell manufacturing in India, as per the Economic Times report.
The initiative is part of the conglomerate’s broader plan to strengthen its new energy vehicle (NEV) ecosystem and reduce reliance on Chinese imports amid global supply chain uncertainties.
The partnership aims to address one of the most critical gaps in India’s EV value chain the domestic production of battery cells, which remains heavily dependent on China.
The proposed JV will cater to multiple divisions within the JSW ecosystem, including:
The new entity could either be housed under an existing group company or a new promoter-led firm, depending on the strategic alignment of JSW’s businesses.
JSW already has deep industrial collaborations in both Japan and South Korea, including joint ventures with JFE Steel and Toshiba.
These existing relationships are expected to facilitate technology transfer and local production capabilities for the upcoming battery cell project.
Battery cell manufacturing is emerging as a critical pillar in JSW’s electric mobility strategy.
A new manufacturing facility in Sambhaji Nagar (Maharashtra) will produce electric vehicles, battery packs, and eventually, battery cells.
