Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), a subsidiary of Vedanta, has announced the establishment of a 10 MTPA tailings reprocessing plant as part of its expansion strategy.
The facility, with a capital investment of ₹3,823 crore, will focus on recovering metals from tailing dumps, residues left after ore processing.
This will be India’s first plant of its kind, designed to minimise the environmental impact of traditional wet tailings disposal. It will improve overall mineral recovery while enhancing sustainability in mining operations. The move aligns with HZL’s vision to integrate growth with responsible resource management.
HZL has set a target to double its production capacity to 2 million tonnes, which could raise its annual revenue to ₹62,000–65,000 crore. With this expansion, silver production, currently around 700 tonnes annually, is expected to rise significantly to 1,500 tonnes, as silver is produced as a by-product of zinc refining.
Earlier in June, the company announced a ₹12,000 crore capex to expand its Debari smelter by 2.5 lakh tonnes, taking its total capacity to 1.38 million tonnes. The project is expected to be operational within 36 months of commencement.
On August 19, 2025, Hindustan Zinc share price (NSE: HINDZINC) opened at ₹433.70, up from its previous close of ₹427.10. At 9:26 AM, the share price of Hindustan Zinc was trading at ₹428.05, up by 0.22% on the NSE.
