Hindustan Copper Limited witnessed a sharp intraday surge of over 6%, reaching ₹363.90 on October 9, 2025. The rally came as global copper prices hit a historic record high, driven by tightening supply and robust demand from the electric vehicle and renewable energy sectors.

Global Copper Prices Rise

Global copper prices soared to a record high amid concerns over supply disruptions. The price momentum was primarily fuelled by Teck Resources’ lowered 2025 production forecast, intensifying fears of a market deficit. This triggered strong buying interest in Indian copper producers, with Hindustan Copper leading the rally on the domestic bourses.

Rising Demand from EV and Renewable Energy Sectors

The long-term copper demand outlook remains positive, supported by the rapid adoption of electric vehicles and expansion in renewable energy infrastructure. Both sectors are heavily copper-dependent, with wiring, motors, and charging infrastructure requiring substantial quantities of the metal.

India, with its growing clean energy initiatives and manufacturing ambitions, stands to benefit from this global demand surge, potentially boosting domestic copper consumption and refining activities.

Impact of US Tariffs and Market Volatility

In July 2025, the United States imposed a 50% tariff on copper imports, sparking a 13% price rally to $5.69 per pound. The move intensified supply constraints and contributed to the ongoing price volatility. While global markets experienced turbulence, Indian producers like Hindustan Copper gained from higher export opportunities and improved margins.

The company’s stock performance reflects optimism that the sustained rally in copper prices could enhance revenue and profitability through the remainder of 2025.
