The Maharashtra state government has announced a phased reduction in electricity tariffs, aiming for a total 26% cut over the next five years. In the first year, consumers will benefit from a 10% reduction. This move is expected to ease the financial pressure on households, businesses, and farmers.
The proposal to reduce power tariffs was submitted by the state electricity distribution company and has been approved by the electricity regulatory authority. This will apply to all areas under the state distributor, except Mumbai, which separate power companies serve.
A major part of the relief is targeted at residential users who consume less than 100 units of electricity per month. Around 70% of the state’s consumers fall into this category, making the cut especially meaningful for low-income households.
The government has also accelerated work on a solar energy scheme aimed at providing consistent daytime electricity to farms. The project is designed to ensure a steady power supply for agricultural needs using solar energy, reducing dependence on traditional sources.
By focusing on renewable energy in its power purchase plans, the state hopes to lower the cost of buying electricity. These savings can help maintain affordable rates for all consumers in the long term.
Earlier this year, petitions had been filed seeking a 10% hike in electricity rates. However, the current decision to reduce tariffs marks a shift towards consumer relief rather than an increase in charges.
The planned reduction in electricity tariffs is a people-friendly step that aims to make power more affordable across sectors. With added emphasis on solar energy and careful planning, the state aims to ensure long-term sustainability and cost-effectiveness in electricity supply.
