Indian maritime companies have made a strong impression at the Nor-Shipping 2025 event held in Oslo, Norway. The event witnessed the signing of multiple high-level agreements focused on shipbuilding, sustainability, and advanced digital solutions. The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, led the Indian delegation and participated in various ceremonial signings.

GRSE and Germany’s Carsten Rehder Sign Major Shipbuilding Pact

Kolkata-based Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) signed a Memorandum of Intent with Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler und Rehder GmbH & Co. KG of Germany. The agreement includes the construction of four additional 7,500 DWT multi-purpose vessels.

These vessels will feature hybrid propulsion systems and will comply with current cybersecurity standards. This new development builds on an earlier order of eight similar vessels already under construction at GRSE’s facility.

Strategic Collaborations with UAE and Global Engine Manufacturer

GRSE further enhanced its international partnerships by signing two new Memorandums of Understanding. One was with Aries Marine LLC, a company based in the United Arab Emirates, focusing on the construction of offshore platforms and vessels. The other was with a globally recognised engine manufacturer, aimed at supporting the integration of modern propulsion technologies.

L&T and Norway’s DNV Join Forces for Future Innovation

India’s Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Norway’s DNV entered into an expansive MoU to explore joint initiatives across several sectors. These include shipbuilding, offshore and port infrastructure development, energy systems, industrial automation, and maritime digital solutions. The agreement also covers areas such as environmental sustainability, risk management, cybersecurity, and software innovation.

Union Minister Highlights India’s Maritime Vision

During his address at the Norwegian Pavilion, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal underlined the growing cooperation between India and Norway in the maritime domain.

He praised Norway's long-standing maritime heritage and its commitment to sustainable practices. He noted that India’s maritime strategy is closely aligned with global standards, particularly under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

The minister also emphasised India’s efforts to develop green ports, promote energy-efficient shipping, and implement port-led industrial growth under flagship schemes such as Sagarmala.

Focus on Green Shipping and Digital Transformation

India and Norway are actively working together on various fronts, including green shipping corridors, decarbonisation, ship recycling, and maritime training. The India-Norway Task Force on Blue Economy remains a key pillar of this collaboration. Joint ventures in offshore wind, smart port solutions, and low-emission shipping are set to define the next phase of growth.
