Over the last couple of years, Kashmir has emerged as the go-to destination for tourists. However, after the Pahalgam attack, tourism took a hit. As per reports, to attract visitors once again, Kashmir is taking steps to revive tourism by offering discounts.

Kashmir Attracting Huge Discounts to Attract Tourists

Kashmir, attracting huge discounts to attract tourists, is the focus of a new initiative by the region’s tourism businesses and authorities. The valley is offering major price reductions on tour packages, hotel stays, and activities as part of a campaign to revive its tourism sector. This follows the tragic attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which led to widespread fear and a wave of cancellations.

The Impact of the Pahalgam Attack on Tourism

The incident in Pahalgam resulted in the death of 25 tourists and a local horse ride operator. Following this, nearly 90% of all pre-booked stays and tours were cancelled, affecting businesses across the valley. Many travellers who had planned summer holidays chose to postpone or call off their trips entirely.

This sudden decline has dealt a serious blow to Kashmir’s tourism-driven economy, which supports a large segment of its population. With tourism halted, thousands of people have lost their livelihoods.

Livelihood Crisis in the Tourism Ecosystem

The shockwaves from the cancellations have reached all corners of the tourism ecosystem. Over 10,000 people in Pahalgam alone have reportedly been laid off. This includes hotel staff such as chefs and waiters, as well as pony handlers, guides, and drivers.

Local businesses reliant on tourist spending, including shops selling handicrafts and regional produce, are also seeing reduced footfall and earnings.

The Revival Campaign Led by Tourism Stakeholders

In response, a coordinated campaign involving the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department and private businesses has been launched. The objective is to rebuild confidence and attract tourists once again by offering significant discounts.

This campaign includes incentives such as reduced prices for accommodation and transport, along with efforts to create a safe and festive atmosphere for visitors. Cultural programmes, events, and even celebrity appearances are part of the strategy to restore Kashmir’s image as a welcoming destination.

Discounts Offered by Hotels and Tour Operators

According to the Kashmir Hoteliers’ Club, some tour operators and hoteliers have agreed to offer up to 50% off on their standard charges. These offers vary depending on the service provider, but the overall aim is to make travel to Kashmir both affordable and appealing.

This discount structure applies to everything from deluxe houseboat stays to curated sightseeing tours. It reflects the industry’s willingness to absorb short-term losses in the hope of long-term recovery.

Broader Economic Significance of Tourism in Kashmir

Tourism is one of the most vital sectors in Kashmir’s economy. Beyond direct employment, it supports industries like transport, food supply, retail, and the sale of local goods such as fruit, spices, and woven handicrafts.

By bringing tourists back, businesses hope to generate a ripple effect that restores jobs and revenue streams throughout the region.

Security Measures and Government Response

Following the attack in April, the Indian government launched Operation Sindoor on May 7. The operation targeted terror-linked locations and continued for four days before a ceasefire was established.

Since then, steps have been taken to restore normalcy and reassure travellers. The tourism department, along with security forces, has increased safety checks and communication to ensure a secure environment for visitors.

Conclusion

The discount-driven campaign is not just about boosting sales; it symbolises the resilience of Kashmir’s people and their collective determination to welcome back tourists. The joint efforts of the government, private players, and local communities reflect a deep commitment to revive a key economic engine through reassurance, affordability, and hospitality.
