International travel spending by Indians rose 25% in the financial year 2023-24, reaching $31.7 billion, according to the ACKO India Travel Report 2025. The report is based on data from 49,000 travel insurance policies issued to over one lakh individuals. The report also estimates that outbound travel spending could exceed $55 billion by 2034 if current trends continue.

Young Travellers

The report shows that 48% of outbound travellers from India belong to the Millennial and Gen Z age groups. These categories include individuals born between 1981 and 1996, based on Pew Research definitions. Of the total outbound travellers, 36% were below the age of 35.

Women Travellers Represent 43%

Women made up 43% of India’s international travellers in 2024, according to the same report. This includes those travelling alone, in groups, or with families. The share marks a notable portion of the total outbound travel from the country last year.

Top Destinations for Indian Travellers

Based on policyholder travel patterns, the top international destinations for Indians in 2024 were:

  • Thailand (13%)
  • United Arab Emirates (10%)
  • United States (6%)

Travel choices were linked to visa accessibility, better air connectivity, and destination popularity on digital platforms. Coastal locations such as Phuket, Bali, and Da Nang were among the frequently visited leisure spots, while urban centres like Dubai, New York, and San Francisco were also in demand.
