In a key development for India’s defence manufacturing sector, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) on 17 July 2025 received the first set of wing assemblies for the LCA Mk1A from Larsen & Toubro (L&T). The assemblies were handed over at L&T’s Precision Manufacturing & Systems Complex in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The event was attended virtually by Secretary (Defence Production) Shri Sanjeev Kumar and physically by HAL’s General Manager (LCA Tejas Division) Shri M Abdul Salam, who accepted the assemblies on HAL’s behalf.

Government Backs Self-Reliance and Industry Partnerships

Speaking during the ceremony, Shri Sanjeev Kumar commended both HAL and L&T for their collaborative efforts toward self-reliance in defence manufacturing. He praised HAL’s leadership in nurturing private partnerships and enhancing capabilities through effective coordination with industry players. Expressing optimism, he stated that the production targets for the LCA Tejas are achievable and called for reducing foreign dependencies by expanding indigenous capabilities.

HAL Expands Structural Capacity via Private Sector Involvement

HAL Chairman and Managing Director Dr DK Sunil highlighted the event as a result of years of close collaboration and a shared pursuit of excellence between HAL and L&T. “HAL is working with suppliers, both large and SMEs, as an initiative towards achieving Aatmanirbharta in the aerospace and defence sector.

HAL has effectively built a parallel aircraft structural assembly line in the private sector, which will help in capacity augmentation of the LCA Tejas program,” he stated. The new wing assemblies form part of this broader structural assembly capacity drive, aimed at accelerating Tejas production.

L&T Targets Production Ramp-Up Through Automation

L&T’s Senior Vice President & Head of Precision Engineering & Systems, Shri Arun Ramchandani, revealed that the company is currently set to deliver four wing sets annually. Plans are already underway to scale this up to 12 sets per year using advanced assembly processes and automation.

The LCA Tejas Division has also received other critical structural components from a range of Indian partners: Air Intake Assemblies from Lakshmi Machine Works, Rear Fuselage from Alpha Tocol, Loom Assemblies from Amphenol, Fin & Rudder Assemblies from Tata Advanced Systems, and Centre Fuselage from VEM Technologies.
