Indian travellers are increasingly steering away from traditional tourist spots and opting for unique, lesser-known destinations. This shift in travel preferences has led to a 45% surge in travel insurance purchases for offbeat and adventurous trips over the past 2-3 years, according to Policybazaar.
Emerging destinations are seeing significant traction. Seychelles tops the list with a 115% year-on-year growth in 2025, while Vietnam follows with a 50% increase. Other popular choices include the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Kenya, and Fiji.
Despite this growth, offbeat destinations still make up just 11% of the overall travel insurance market, suggesting untapped potential.
The offbeat trend is mainly driven by travellers aged 25 to 35, who account for 44% of insurance purchases in this category. Many choose comprehensive policies worth ₹1 lakh or more, especially those that cover high-risk activities like diving, trekking, and safaris.
These trips are typically shorter, averaging just 18 days as compared to 51 days for mainstream travel. Bookings are often made last-minute, with insurance purchased closer to departure. Travellers prioritise coverage for medical emergencies, baggage loss, and trip disruptions. This makes comprehensive insurance a crucial part of travel planning.
The October to March period sees peak offbeat travel, driven by festive seasons and pleasant weather. Since the pandemic, there’s been a 50%+ increase in travel insurance for offbeat trips, highlighting a lasting change in travel behaviour focused on safety and unique experiences.
