India has reopened tourist visa services for Chinese nationals at its embassies and consulates worldwide, marking the first such move since the suspension following the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes.
The development aligns with ongoing efforts by both countries to stabilise relations after the border tensions that began on 5 May 2020.
In August this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin during the Summit of the leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. The leaders noted progress since their last meeting in Kazan in October 2024 and agreed that India and China remain development partners whose differences should not escalate into disputes.
Parallel to diplomatic engagement, the government is preparing a framework to shorten visa processing times for Chinese engineers and technicians. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade is coordinating with the Ministries of Home and External Affairs to support businesses that rely on Chinese-made machinery.
The government is also moving to clear pending import approvals for goods from China and other countries. DPIIT has sought company-wise details of delayed foreign manufacturer certifications, with plans to resume issuing and renewing licences on a case-by-case basis.
The approvals will apply to components of electronic products, steel, shoes, household items, raw materials and other daily-use goods, many of which have remained pending since the 2020 border clashes.

India’s steps to reopen tourist visas, expedite technical visas and accelerate import clearances indicate a broader shift toward restoring economic and diplomatic engagement with China.
