In a landmark move, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) will launch India’s first comprehensive Household Income Survey in 2026 through the National Sample Survey (NSS). This major initiative aims to fill long-standing data gaps related to income distribution and wage patterns across the nation.
Despite over 70 years of experience conducting household-level statistical surveys, the NSS has not yet executed an all-India income-specific study. Previous attempts in 1955, 1958, 1964, 1969 and 1983 remained pilot efforts due to inconsistencies and challenges in capturing precise income data. To address this, NSS will now roll out a dedicated survey focused exclusively on household income by 2026, incorporating international best practices.
A Technical Expert Group (TEG), chaired by Dr. Surjit S. Bhalla, has been set up to guide this exercise. The group brings together top economists and statisticians across institutions like ISI Kolkata, JNU, University of Hyderabad, and the Delhi School of Economics. The TEG will oversee key stages such as survey design, concepts, sampling, estimation methodology, and comparability with models from countries like the USA, Canada and Australia.

India has undergone significant economic and social changes over the past 75 years. Yet, critical data about how household income is distributed remains scarce. The results of this survey will play a vital role in shaping welfare schemes, understanding income inequality trends, and evaluating the impact of technology adoption on wage patterns across sectors.
Previous surveys often reported income less than total consumption and savings, raising questions about data accuracy. The 2026 survey seeks to overcome previous shortcomings through updated techniques and robust field methodologies. It will also involve subject experts and ministries to ensure national applicability and policy relevance.
The launch of the Household Income Survey in 2026 marks a milestone in India's data ecosystem. Designed with expert guidance and global standards, it promises to deliver crucial insights into income distribution, helping align policy with the economic realities of Indian households.
