In a significant development for defence communication, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted field trials of two advanced indigenous systems — the Software Defined Radio (SDR) Manpack and the Compact Transhorizon Communication System (CTCS). These trials were carried out by DRDO’s Defence Electronics Application Laboratory (DEAL) in the rugged terrain of Joshimath, Uttarakhand, reinforcing India's focus on mission-critical, homegrown solutions to strengthen national security.

Joint Efforts and Real-World Testing

The field trials, conducted in close coordination with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and various central armed police forces (CAPFs), rigorously evaluated the systems under real-world operational environments. Officers from ITBP, SSB, BSF, Assam Rifles, IB, NSG, CRPF, CISF, and other user agencies participated.

According to DRDO’s official statement on X, “Both the systems demonstrated robust and reliable performance meeting the user-defined operational benchmarks.” The validation included verification of critical parameters aligned with Qualification Requirements (QR) and Technical Documents (TDs).

Indigenous Tech Tailored for Remote Operations

The SDR, developed for naval and tactical communication, supports secure digital voice and data across multiple frequency bands, including V/UHF, HF, and L-band. Its versatility spans naval, manpack, and handheld roles.

Meanwhile, the CTCS developed by DEAL, Dehradun, is a terrestrial backhaul communication system designed to ensure high data rate connectivity in remote and gridless areas. This large-hop system is particularly beneficial where civil communication infrastructure is absent.

Conclusion

The successful trials underscore DRDO’s commitment to advancing indigenous, secure communication capabilities for critical defence needs. These innovations mark a vital step in empowering Indian forces with reliable, high-performance systems suited to varied terrains and national security operations.
