The Delhi High Court has ordered online platforms, including Amazon and Flipkart, to take down products listed under the names ‘Reliance’ and ‘Jio’ without authorisation. The directive came in response to a trademark infringement suit filed by Reliance Industries Ltd.
An interim order passed by Justice Saurabh Banerjee has restrained several sellers from manufacturing, marketing, or distributing FMCG goods using the ‘Reliance’ and ‘Jio’ names. One of the named individuals in the order is Pawan Kumar Gupta. The restriction will stay in effect until the next hearing on November 13, 2025.
According to the order, the sellers had copied elements such as logos, fonts, and colour schemes that resemble Reliance's brand identity. The court noted this as an attempt to mislead customers by creating a visual likeness to the original trademarks.
The court has also directed Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, Snapdeal, and IndiaMART to provide complete details of sellers involved in the unauthorised use of these trademarks. This includes business information and any documentation related to product listings.
The judgment acknowledged that semi-literate and rural consumers often rely on brand visuals to identify products. The misuse of known marks could lead to confusion, especially in markets where brand trust plays a major role in purchase decisions.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for November 13. Until then, the restrained parties are not allowed to deal in any FMCG goods under the contested trademarks.

The case brings attention to trademark misuse on online marketplaces and the need for better tracking of seller activity. The matter remains under judicial consideration.
