Silver has emerged as one of the strongest-performing commodities since the second half of 2025, with prices in India scaling record highs. What began as a steady rally earlier in the year turned into a sharp surge from October onwards, driven by supply shortages, festive demand, rising industrial consumption, and growing investor interest.

By December 22, 2025, MCX silver prices touched a historic high of ₹2,14,000 per kg, tracking global spot prices that crossed US$69 per ounce. Silver prices surged nearly 130% year-to-date, delivering exceptional returns to investors.

Key Reasons Behind the Silver Rally

1. Acute Silver Shortage in India

  • India is the world’s largest consumer of silver but depends heavily on imports.
  • Silver imports declined 42% in the first eight months of 2025 to 3,302 tonnes, triggering a supply crunch.
  • The shortage became severe during the festive season when demand peaked.

This problem is global. The silver market has been in deficit for the fifth straight year, with 2025 demand at 34.3 tonnes against supply of only 29 tonnes. Global inventories have also dropped sharply, limiting availability for import-dependent countries like India.

2. Festive and Wedding Season Buying

  • October 2025 witnessed a buying frenzy.
  • Silver imports jumped 528.71% year-on-year to US$2.71 billion.
  • Prices surged from ₹1,51,000 per kg at the start of October to nearly ₹1,90,000 per kg by mid-month.

Dhanteras, Diwali, and the wedding season amplified the price impact of already tight supplies.

3. Technology and Energy Transition Demand

Silver demand has expanded beyond traditional uses due to:

  • Solar energy: India’s renewable target of 500 GW by 2030; each solar panel uses about 20 grams of silver.
  • Electric vehicles: Used in sensors, wiring, and connectors.
  • Electronics & 5G: Growth under PLI schemes boosted industrial consumption.

4. Rising Investment Demand

  • Silver outperformed gold in 2025, gaining about 71% versus gold’s 54%.
  • Silver ETFs saw record inflows due to lower entry prices and strong momentum.
  • MCX silver futures turnover rose 5%, while options trading more than doubled amid high volatility.
  • India was the only major physical market to record higher silver investment demand, with coin and bar demand rising 21%, the highest since 2015.

Conclusion

Silver’s rally since the second half of 2025 reflects a powerful mix of supply shortages, festive demand, industrial transformation, and rising investor participation. While prices are elevated, silver’s role in India’s energy transition and manufacturing growth continues to support long-term demand.
