Air India Crash: IRDAI Directs Insurers to Fast-Track Claims

Last week, on June 12, 2025, a tragic incident occurred in Ahmedabad. Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner heading for London with 242 people on board, crashed into the BJ Medical College hostel shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. This devastating event has led to a significant loss of life and property.
What Did IRDAI Say on Air India Flight 171 Crash?
In the wake of this tragedy, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has stepped forward. Expressing deep condolences to the victims' families, IRDAI has issued a crucial advisory to all insurance companies. Their message is clear: the insurance sector is committed to providing quick support to the affected families through rapid claim settlements.
How Will Insurance Companies Act After IRDAI’s Guidelines?
Given that overseas medical insurance was mandatory for all passengers, IRDAI has outlined specific steps for insurers:
Obtain Victim Lists: Insurers must get authenticated lists of all victims, including passengers and those in the affected buildings, from official sources.
Verify Policies: They need to quickly check their records for Overseas Medical Insurance, Personal Accident policies, and Life Insurance policies related to the victims.
Fast-Track Claims: The process for settling these claims must be expedited.
Waive Formalities: Importantly, insurers are asked to waive requirements like FIRs (First Information Reports) or post-mortem reports if official confirmations of death are available.
Pay Nominees: Claims should be settled directly with the nominee listed in the policy.
No Delays: Insurers must ensure that no claim is denied or delayed due to minor procedural issues for confirmed deceased individuals.
How is IRDAI Helping Victims at the Crash Site?
For those affected on the ground at the BJ Medical College hostel and other crash site buildings, IRDAI has called for a dedicated joint support cell. This cell, to be set up by both the Life Insurance Council and General Insurance Council at the hospital treating victims, will help provide information to insurers regarding health and life insurance claims and any other needed assistance.
How is IRDAI Monitoring Insurance Companies?
To ensure smooth coordination, all insurers are required to appoint a senior-level Nodal Officer. Furthermore, they must submit weekly reports to IRDAI for a month, starting June 16, 2025, and subsequently as directed by the regulator.
