Passive funds in India have shown strong growth momentum, with equity-oriented ETFs continuing to dominate the segment. AMFI data indicates a consistent rise in assets under management, reflecting investor interest across different categories, including gold and silver ETFs.

Growth in Passive Funds AUM

According to AMFI data, the AUM of passive funds in India stood at ₹12.56 lakh crore in July 2025, marking a 17% rise from ₹10.75 lakh crore in July 2024. Passive funds now account for 16% of the total mutual fund industry AUM, which was at ₹77 lakh crore in July 2025.

Equity ETFs Continue to Dominate

Within the passive fund segment, domestic equity-oriented exchange-traded funds hold the largest share with ₹7.17 lakh crore in assets, representing 57% of the total passive AUM. This is followed by domestic equity-oriented index funds with ₹1.89 lakh crore and target maturity index funds with ₹1.02 lakh crore in assets.

Precious Metal ETFs Gain Momentum

Gold ETFs have achieved an AUM of ₹66,664 crore, while silver ETFs have reached ₹22,162 crore. Both categories witnessed strong investor interest, with notable net inflows recorded in July.

Net Inflows and Outflows Across Categories

Passive funds saw total net inflows of ₹8,259 crore in July 2025. Domestic equity ETFs led the way with ₹3,004 crore in inflows, followed by domestic equity index funds with ₹2,773 crore and silver ETFs with ₹1,904 crore. Gold ETFs attracted inflows worth ₹1,256 crore.

However, certain categories posted net outflows. Target maturity index funds saw outflows of ₹1,089 crore, debt ETFs recorded outflows of ₹465 crore, and overseas passive fund FoFs experienced outflows of ₹64 crore.

Number of Passive Fund Schemes

There are currently 655 passive fund schemes in the market. Domestic equity index funds lead with 217 schemes, followed by domestic equity ETFs with 196 schemes and target maturity index funds with 97 schemes.
