Indian Railways has reached a significant milestone by electrifying over 99.1% of its 69,800 route km network as of August-end. The national transporter is also advancing renewable energy efforts to align with its net-zero carbon target, setting a benchmark for sustainable infrastructure development.

Indian Railways Achieves 99.1% Electrification Across its Network

As of August 2025, 69,154 route kilometres (RKM) of Indian Railways’ 69,800 RKM broad-gauge network stand electrified. The remaining 646 RKM is concentrated in just 5 states: Assam, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Goa. Assam leads the unelectrified list with 269 RKM, accounting for nearly 10% of its tracks. Rajasthan trails with 93 RKM, with less than 1% of its network pending electrification. The rest of the network is effectively electrified, marking an infrastructural transformation towards improved efficiency and reduced emissions.

Railways Advances Solar Energy to Support Net-Zero Objective

Indian Railways is complementing its electrification drive with solar energy integration. Installed solar capacity surged past 4,500 MW, combining rooftop and land-based projects. Rooftop panels have been deployed across 2,427 stations, 1,295 service buildings, and 673 residential quarters, contributing 236 MW. A further 224 MW in rooftop capacity is currently under implementation.

Land-Based and Round-The-Clock Renewable Projects Underway

In addition to rooftop efforts, Indian Railways is developing large-scale land-based solar power projects on surplus land. 1,040 MW of planned capacity is under construction. Moreover, 2,301 MW of renewable energy in round-the-clock (RE-RTC) mode is being deployed across Rajasthan and Maharashtra. These projects are grid-connected, allowing a consistent power supply and reduced dependency on conventional energy sources.

Environmental and Operational Impact

Full electrification and renewable energy expansion are expected to significantly lower Indian Railways’ carbon footprint. Electrified trains reduce fuel costs and emissions, while solar adoption powers operational areas sustainably. These steps provide a scalable model for green transition within large-scale public infrastructure.

Conclusion

With over 99% of its network electrified and solar capacity exceeding 4,500 MW, Indian Railways is in the final stretch of a transformative journey toward sustainability. These advancements not only improve operational efficiency but also support India’s commitment to a greener future.
