India’s inflation dynamics in August 2025 highlight both resilience and shifts across categories. While headline inflation inched up, food inflation stayed negative for the third straight month. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) continues to maintain its inflation target, and the numbers show that consumer price pressures remain broadly contained.
The year-on-year Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation for August 2025 stood at 2.07% compared to 1.61% in July 2025. This marks an increase of 46 basis points. The rise is largely due to cost increases in vegetables, meat and fish, oil and fats, eggs, and personal care products.
Food inflation continued to remain in negative territory for the third consecutive month, standing at -0.69% in August 2025 compared to -1.76% in July 2025. Rural food inflation was at -0.70% while urban food inflation came in slightly better at -0.58%. The improvement in numbers suggests some easing, though prices of vegetables and protein-rich food items exerted upward pressure.
Rural areas reported headline inflation of 1.69% in August 2025, up from 1.18% in July 2025. Food inflation in rural India improved to -0.70% from -1.74% a month earlier. The marginal rise indicates some revival in demand and the impact of food category movements.
In urban areas, headline inflation increased from 2.10% in July 2025 to 2.47% in August 2025. Food inflation improved from -1.90% to -0.58%. The data reflect that urban centres experienced higher overall price growth compared to rural areas, particularly due to demand for essential categories.
Housing inflation for August 2025 was recorded at 3.09% compared to 3.17% in July 2025. This index is calculated only for urban areas, showing stability in housing costs.
Education inflation eased to 3.60% in August 2025 from 4.11% in July 2025. This combined rate includes both rural and urban sectors and shows moderation in costs related to education services.
Health inflation stood at 4.40% in August 2025 compared to 4.57% in July 2025. Though slightly lower, health-related expenses continue to remain relatively higher than other categories.
Transport and communication inflation was 1.94% in August 2025 against 2.12% in July 2025. This moderation may reflect stabilisation in fuel costs and communication services.
The inflation rate for fuel and light came in at 2.43% in August 2025 compared to 2.67% in July 2025. The slight decline provides some relief for households in both rural and urban areas.

Inflation at 2.07% remains comfortably within the RBI’s target, supported by negative food inflation and easing in several essential categories. While pressures from vegetables and protein items have lifted overall numbers, the broader picture continues to show stability.
