On May 8, 2024, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) informed the stock exchanges that the company’s Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) business had received multiple orders globally, which testifies to its leading position in the clean energy space in India.

The PT&D business has won orders to set up two Floating Solar Plants in India, comprising a cumulative floating solar capacity of over 150 MWac. This is in addition to a ground-mounted Solar PV of 120 MWac capacity. Floating solar projects involve installing solar modules on floating structures positioned in a water body, such as a lake, reservoir, or abandoned quarry. In contrast to ground-mounted solar plants, floating solar plants eliminate the need for land acquisition and generally entail fewer civil works. Additionally, they offer other site-specific advantages beyond reducing water evaporation.

PT&D has also bagged orders to set up 765 kV transmission lines and a gas-insulated substation to incorporate solar energy zones in Karnataka and Rajasthan. These important links will allow the evacuation of Renewable Energy to load centres in various parts of India.

Regarding the orders from international regions, PT&D has won an order to build a 400kV Gas-Insulated Substation in the State of Kuwait. This substation will power the developed residential clusters as part of the South Sabah Al-Ahmad City project.

The Sultanate of Oman is combining its several standalone electricity networks into a 400 kV national grid. As part of the integration and grid strengthening initiative, PT&D has secured orders to build two 400 kV Grid Stations and a 400 kV Overhead Transmission Line.

The business also secured an order in the United Arab Emirates, where the order is to construct two 132 kV substations with associated works.

Sharing his thoughts on multiple orders, the Whole-Time Director and Sr Executive Vice President (Utilities) of Larsen & Toubro, Mr T Madhava Das, said, “Reliable, clean energy is the preferred form for electricity in propelling the growth of both traditional and emerging industries. It is heartening to see that the region makes substantial investments in both renewables and grid infrastructure in a timely manner.”

He further added, “Also, solar power and related hybrid technologies witness rapid innovations that are not limited to cell technologies but also encompass project formulation, application areas, design & engineering and construction methods. We are proud to be at the forefront of implementing such technologically advanced projects of a critical nature.”
