Walmart has announced plans to onboard one lakh more micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) under its Vriddhi supplier development programme in India over the next 3 years. The company has partnered with the Ideas to Impact Foundation (i2i) to implement this phase.

History of the Programme

Launched in 2019, Walmart Vriddhi has so far trained over 70,000 MSMEs across India. The programme was initially classroom-based but shifted to a digital format during the pandemic. It offers training on business skills, digital commerce, and export readiness. The modules are hosted on Walmart’s Supplier Academy platform and are free of cost.

Training and Market Linkages

MSMEs under the programme receive access to basic and advanced training modules, including cross-border trade. There is no requirement to partner with Walmart or Flipkart post-training, but those who complete the programme have the option to sell through both platforms. Many of the MSMEs onboarded so far operate from tier-2 and tier-3 cities.

Export and Sourcing Plans

Walmart has set a goal to export goods worth $10 billion annually from India by 2027. The Vriddhi programme is a part of this broader strategy. The company has been sourcing a range of products from India, including food, toys, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and wellness items. Over the last two decades, Walmart has sourced more than $30 billion worth of goods from India for its global operations.

Additional Initiatives and Tools

The company is also introducing tools focused on growth, sustainability, and export readiness. Reportedly, it is looking to expand partnerships and connect MSMEs with other ecosystem enablers. Flipkart has its own initiative, Samarth, which supports artisans, weavers, and micro-enterprises by giving them visibility on its platform.

Conclusion

With the extended partnership and new target, Walmart continues to scale its MSME engagement in India through training, digital access, and integration into supply chains.
